Yes, it's about like that. lol Today Ann Lister's in the naughty seat here in the playhouse. and I
couldn't be more thrilled. Ann is also our Author of the month as well. That is located in
the drop down menu when you hover over the My Precious...sss tab up top.
So let's get started...
Ann: Thanks so much for agreeing to come here and do my little interview. Not sure if you could tell or not, but a big fan of yours. You are a great author. When did you decide to start writing, was it something you always knew you’d do, or was it a surprise and just sort of happened?
Ann: In the beginning I did it to entertain my friends and family, but the more short stories I created, the more I wanted to do it on a serious level. This was back in the 1990's. I would take bits and pieces from my dreams and create stories from that. Over the years it has snowballed to an obsession. I don't think I could stop writing now if I was mandated by the courts to do so. LOL
Me: Are you a pantster or plotter?
Ann: I will spend long time, sometimes many months plotting the story in my head. I'll work every angle I can think of, so by the time I sit at the computer to actually write the story, the first draft of the story is basically written.
Me: Where do you write?
Ann: At home, office, kitchen table? Last Spring, Make You Mine, Book 3 in The Rock Gods series hit #1 in Gay Romance, Gay Fiction, and Gay Erotica. This was a first for me and to mark that accomplishment, my husband turned our three-season sun room into a year-round office for me. I picked everything out, cabinets, desk top, etc. This is a nice bright space with a beautiful view, too. I love this spot so much! It is my own personal “happy place”. Before this office became a reality, I was sitting at the kitchen counter staring at my appliances.
Me: Oh that sounds like a dream come true.. Right now, I write in the bedroom on a make-shift custom desk. (by custom I mean it's really an old dresser with drawers on one side and it's cut out on the other side) with two mismatched lamps. Haha! I usually have to rush to the kitchen counter though, several times a day, as the internet gets a better connection there. I'm hoping to see the day when I can design a writing room, I want bookshelves everywhere.. But for now, as long as I'm writing, I'd be happy writing in a closet if that is what it took.
Me: Is there anything you have to do while you write? I have to have music and coffee, lots of coffee.
Ann: I write rock star romance, which means I listen to loud rock music while I write. I try and match the style of music or the tone of the singers to the characters in my head. Sometimes I burn some white sage, too, to set the mood. Lol. I'm not a fan of coffee, but I do enjoy hot chocolate from time to time, but most often it is ice water.... and dark chocolate. I have to have the chocolate while I write!
Me: How did you come up with Rock Gods? The books themselves and the title for the series? Did you know it was going to be a series when you first started?
Ann: The idea for Fall For Me, Book 1 in the series hit me hard and fast (much like the lives of my rock star characters!) and it was just so damn visual in my head! I didn't need to percolate that story in my head for months on end. In fact, I had the idea formulated, and the first draft written in three months. It's never happened that fast for me. The characters were well defined to me and that had me thinking “series” right from the start. I started with Dagger Drummond from Black Ice, but the characters in the secondary band, Ivory Tower, started talking to me first and much louder. That gave me the story ideas for all the guys in Ivory Tower. With the Spring release of Book 5, Meant For Me, I will have concluded the stories for Ivory Tower. Book 6 will start the stories for the men in Black Ice. Each title has a deeper meaning to the main characters, it might be part of their personalities, or something along those lines. Most of my book titles have double meanings. As for the name of the series itself, fans of rock bands look at the performers as gods, larger than life, and since my characters are in the rock genre, it made perfect sense to me to call them Rock Gods.
Me: Do you have one character that just sort of took over and made himself the boss of the others? (Shhh…asking because I have one that did that in my Passion Series. I’m just needing to check my sanity level here)
Ann: I think that honor is shared equally by Dagger and Alex. They're both lead singers for their bands and both are very vocal on and off stage.
Me: What is your favorite scene, like the all-time favorite from all of your books? Can you describe it for us?
Ann: Oh, wow! That is one hell of a question! I'm not sure I could give you just one favorite! I have several scenes that quickly pop into my head that could be called my “favorites”. One is the limo scene in Fall For Me when Dagger and Ryan kiss for the first time. The proposal scene at the end of Make You Mine is another. The scene in Looking At Forever which Rooster loses his mom is powerful, and so on. My favorite scenes are always the ones that pull the biggest emotions from me when I write them, whether it be sadness, arousal, anger, stuff like that. Those scenes rock for a variety of reasons.
Me: I hear you on that, love when a scene does that to me too. In Payce's Passion there was like that.
Me: You write in the M/M genre, is that also your favorite to read or do you prefer something else?
Ann: I'd say 98% of the books I read are M/M, but every once in a while I'll read M/F or a menage story, preferably M/M/F if it is a menage story. Although I like M/F, I don't love it, and there always seems to be something missing for me in those stories. My passion – and obsession is with M/M.
Me: Is there a genre you’d like to try, but haven’t yet?
Ann: I recently had an idea for a F/F story pop into my head. That story is still congealing in my brain, and the characters aren't loud enough for me to sit and “write” their story, yet. Once the characters are ready for me to tell their story, they'll let me know. LOL
Me: Kind of like that? This is exactly what my character, Sparky, did. It's like he walked into every scene and stole the show. It's how he got his own book, there wasn't going to be a part three. Well there wasn't supposed to be a part 2 either though. lol Gotta listen when they scream at you.
Me: What is your best “fan’ moment? Something that a reader said or did that just totally made your day or week?
Ann: Oh, I love when those moments happen! When a reader takes the time to reach out to me to tell me how one of my stories made them feel it is overwhelming and can sometimes bring me to tears. That moment when a reader “gets” your story.... priceless. It makes all those hours of working the story, seven days a week for months on end, worth every mentally exhausting minute.
Me: If you could go back five years and tell yourself something, what would it be?
Ann: Never give up. That sounds like simple advice, but there were so many times early on that I wanted to do just that, and in the end the story won out. Our characters become so real to us, living inside our heads for such a long time and demanding we tell their story. How can you give up on that?
Me: What do you have in the works for us for during 2015?
Ann: Book 5, Mean For Me will release in the Spring, hopefully sometime in May. This is Tony and Jared's friends-to-lovers story. Book 6 is Dante and Ashton's story (from Black Ice). Their story will be a Fall release. I also have a big book signing event in Las Vegas coming up on April 3-5th.
Profound moments with Piper! lol
Is there any thing you’d like to say to your readers, or maybe advice for a new writer?
It is the unrelenting support and love I get from my readers that keeps me sitting in front of my laptop every day, working harder to squeeze out every last drop of emotion to write a better story for them to enjoy. I could never express what their support does for me or how enormously grateful I am to have them! I love them all and without them, I would not be where I am today writing The Rock Gods.
As for advice to new authors, I'd say to write what you love and read as many books as you can in your chosen genre. Also, read the reviews for the books that are in the top ranking slots and the reviews for ones that are not. Read your own reviews and try to learn something even from the less than favorable ones. And finally, be sure to grow a thick skin early on, because no matter how good your stories may be there will always be those that will not like it.
Me: That is so true too. as for the readers and the advice, well said. Thanks so much Ann for stopping by and letting me fire off a few questions at you. Very best of luck on your upcoming release.
